These 3 unicorns are in the same market: express delivery of food and daily products. These 3 unicorns are in the process of outsourcing and are competing in many countries, like in France where the 3, newly arrived, are now fighting for the French and even European market.

Startups with a very fast growth

Getir, the oldest and the 1st European dragon

Getir, among these 3 Q-commerce startups, is the oldest. Founded in 2015, it achieves unicorn status on March 26, 2021, with a $300 million Series C funding round, achieving a valuation of $2.6 billion. But within a year, its raises have multiplied.

Since then, Getir has raised $555 million in Series D, and $768 million in Series E in March 2022. This has given Turkey its first dragon, the first in Europe, with Getir having a valuation of $11.8 billion.

Getir is the pride of Turkey, which has only seen two unicorns appear (the other is DreamGames, specializing in video games). Getir is therefore very present in Turkey and is present in many countries: England, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, France and Portugal. But Getir is now also present in the United States!

Flink, the recent buyer of Cajoo

Flink is the one that was created the latest, on September 18, 2020 in Germany after the 1st confinement in Europe. In just one year, it became a unicorn by raising $750 million on December 10, 2021. It currently has a valuation of $ 2.8 billion.

But the different agreements it has made in this year 2022 are the symbol of its future ambitions. Indeed, while conquering the French market, it bought Cajoo in May 2022.

This acquisition for 93 million dollars also allowed it to form a partnership with Carrefour, which became one of Flink's shareholders. This allows to launch a great conquest of market share in France in particular.

Gorillas, the German big brother that absorbed Frichti

Gorillas was created at the very beginning of the pandemic, on May 1, 2020, at a time when many countries (especially in Europe) were undergoing their first lockdown. In less than a year, and only one day before Flink, Gorillas reached unicorn status. Also German, it now has a valuation of 3.1 billion dollars.

Gorillas is also trying to diversify, also with an acquisition strategy, and also at the expense of French startups.  Gorillas acquired Frichti, a startup already present in 9 French cities, in March. This allows it to consolidate its presence in France, offering ready-to-eat meals on delivery, but also to internationalize the concept in other European countries.

The Frichti startup, however, was older: dating back to 2015, it boasted, among other things, that it was one of the first companies in the sector to "achieve operational profitability." Something to inspire Gorillas, then.

Their country presence and employees

Flink, the least internationalized

Flink, on the other hand, is present in only 4 countries: Germany, France, the Netherlands and Austria, only countries that border Germany. But Flink can count on its presence in nearly 60 cities with up to 2500 references.

It has "only" 12,000 employees, i.e. 2,000 fewer than Gorillas, its most comparable competitor, especially in its main markets (Germany, Netherlands, France).

Gorillas and its presence only in Europe

Gorillas is currently present in 6 countries: Germany, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and the UK.  This represents a total of 42 cities, but very unevenly distributed: half are in Germany (21 cities) and 10 cities in the Netherlands. For the other 4 countries, their presence is mainly limited to the metropolises or even only the capital.

In terms of employees, the company had 14,400** worldwide in May 2022. In May 2022, it had to lay off 300 employees and withdraw from countries like Italy to try to be more viable.

Getir, the most globalized

Getir is also present in 9 countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United States, the United Kingdom and especially Turkey.) Its Turkish market is extremely developed, since it covers every major city in the 81 Turkish provinces, Getir having even declared that its Turkish market was already financially viable.  It is the unicorn that employs the most people with 32 000 employees worldwide!

Note that Getir is unlike the other 2, is present in the United States, in 3 cities: New York, Boston and Chicago.

But in the United States there is another major competitor, Gopuff, the largest unicorn in the sector with a valuation of 15 billion dollars. But Getir's progressive establishment on the American market shows a certain maturity and a competitive strength as on the British market where it is present in no less than 15 cities.

To conclude, Getir, the first to have developed, is the best established with diversified markets concerning territories, while Flink and Gorillas often share the same piece of the cake. For the moment, each of them is developing acquisition strategies with numerous advertisements and welcome promotions, but there is no doubt that the market, despite its growth, may be complicated to share between these 3 unicorns.
